Words We Use

Pediatric DentistryPRACTICE TERMINOLOGY

When we talk with children about dental care, we are careful to use words that create a positive and relaxed mind set.  In other words, we use friendly terms and try to avoid words that might sound scary.  You can help your child have a good first visit by also talking about dentists and dental care in a very positive but general manner.  You can explain that the dentist helps keep their teeth happy and healthy, and that we will be very gentle as we look into their mouth to count and possibly tickle their teeth.  Please do not use any words like:  needle, shot, drill, pull, or any other words suggesting unpleasantness.  We can introduce them to the details in our child-friendly term while they are here.

This list of words will also help you understand your child as they explain their visit, as these are the words they will have heard from us.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us build a good attitude toward dental care with your child.

If at any time you have questions, please feel free to ask our staff or call our office.  We are here to help in any way we can.  We appreciate you entrusting your child’s dental health to us.

Thank you!
